Johnny
Jameson (born
11th March 1958)

Johnny,
if you don't know him, lived most of his life on the Monkstown Road, and
was one of the very few local boys to go to the
1982 World Cup Finals in
Spain. Johnny was one of
Billy Bingham's 22-man squad, picked along with the likes of Norman
Whiteside and Pat Jennings, and which famously beat the host country 1-0
courtesy of a remarkable Gerry Armstrong goal.
Johnny started off playing Boys Brigade (BB) football with another great Jimmy
Nicholl, and went on to join his first Irish league club Bangor in the
1975. After
trials with Tottenham with Gerry Armstrong he was then
signed by Huddersfield at the age of 19. Unfortunately, after only
one season the winger was still unsettled and homesick, and returned home
to join Linfield under manager Roy Coyle.
At
his spell at Linfield in
1978/80 he won 2 league titles and the 1st of his 7 Irish Cup medals. In
late 1980, to the shock of Linfield fans, he signed for Ronnie McFall's
Glentoran....and the rest is history. Johnny had 498 appearances for
Glentoran between 1980-1994 scoring 131 goals. He knocked in 151 in
total throughout his career.
Johnny
also enjoyed the European stage, scoring spectacular goals against Paris
St. Germain and Dundee United. He retired in 1994 to spend more time
on youth work at his local church, and still maintains the high levels of
commitment and enthusiasm he was renown for .
